The Winning Essay
Curiously Satisfying
by Stephanie Tran, Temple City, CA
For me, community service began as a race for “hours.” I started high school believing that it was going to be tedious work, like filing papers for my mom, something that I would do, but wouldn’t ever love, care about or look twice at. After spending some time at a school library inputting data and installing computer programs, I realized that there had to be more to community service than just pressing buttons on a keyboard.
On Thanksgiving morning two years ago, I went to go feed the homeless in Pasadena. I was uncomfortable at first, my mindset narrow, but when I began offering food and filling their plates, I felt rather content, as if I were in a warm bubble bath after a long day’s work. One of the homeless men smiled at me, his face glowing and brightening the atmosphere like a fireplace does to make a family room warm around Christmas time. When I went home, I did not eat much- I was already full with the satisfaction that comes with reaching out to others in need. Cliché, but that was how it felt. It suddenly hit me that this curiously satisfying, happy feeling, is what community service is truly about.
After that day, my attitude changed. I helped teachers with more than just a desire for “hours.” I helped them with the intent of lightening their load so they would be able to go home earlier. I learned to appreciate the effort they put into their students’ education. In the Maternity ward of Methodist Hospital, I gained social skills, speaking skills, and communication skills through talking to nurses, answering phone calls, and communicating with both visitors and patients. I dedicated my time to Kaleidoscope Club, a community service-oriented club, and I organize a team and fund-raise annually for Relay for Life, a volunteer-driven cancer event. I learned how to manage my time and have a positive attitude. I learned the meaning of commitment and dedication, both values I hold very high.
The more I dedicated my time to community service, the more giving back became a part of me. To me, community service is not just using up time, but feeling, a life lesson, or even life lessons, in itself, like concepts learned only through hands-on experience. There is something so different, so unique, that comes with giving back to one’s community. Maybe it is the satisfaction of helping those who may otherwise receive less help. Maybe it is seeing people from all different areas, smile with that same smile of appreciation and gratitude. Or perhaps it is knowing that I have a sensitivity to others that is only gained through community service, or knowing that giving back to the community has made my life richer and more meaningful. Whether it is any of those reasons, I know that community service has transformed me into a more open-minded and compassionate person with a bigger heart and a willingness to sacrifice for others.
